Adam Dealey
Adam was a very brave and courageous 10 year old battling to survive a rare children's bone Cancer, Ewing's Sarcoma.
Adam was born and brought up in Hemel Hempstead and lived a very active life until the Summer of 1994 when, after complaining of discomfort in his ribs and back, he was taken to the doctors on a couple of occasions before being referred to a specialist. After various investigations he was eventually diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma in the September of that year.
He received treatment over a ten-month period consisting of eight intensive chemotherapy courses, major surgery removing his 7th rib and part of his vertebra plus 25 radiotheraphy sessions. While still undergoing treatment it was discovered that 2 tumours had developed in his spinal canal causing him to loose the use of his legs and we were informed that no further treatment could be given.
On the 15th July 1995 Adam lost his fight to beat this aggressive and vicious cancer.
Adam was a bright, cheerful, energetic and caring boy, and an extremely talented sports person, especially at football. In fact Adam was the youngest boy ever to be picked to play for his school team South Hill.
After Adam died it was found that there was no specific fund set up in the UK to develop the research and treatment of this terrible disease. Ewing's Sarcoma is a cancer found only in children and can develop anywhere in the body, but usually starts in a bone or soft tissue near bones. About 50 children a year develop this tumour but the success rate in treating this is only between 50 and 60 per cent.
A fund has been set up in Adam's memory to raise money to help other children suffering from this condition and many events take place on a regular basis to fund the research and treatment of Ewing's.
It is a credit to Adam that many of his friends still hold him in the highest esteem and still regularly attend events held in his memory.
