3rd BCRT Patients' and Supporters' Conference 2009
The event was attended by a number of researchers who brought along large, informative and fascinating posters about the BCRT funded research work they are currently carrying out. Also on display were photos of some of the fantastic fundraising that supporters have been doing as well as information and support for future ideas. The day began with an exciting message from the chairman Mike Francis who was thrilled to be able to announce that the Trust had reached the £1millon mark in its fundraising. The theme of the conference was the fact that there has been no change to survival in 20 years and an informative talk on this subject was delivered by the keynote speaker, Professor Sir Alan Craft. Once again the day was punctuated by six personal stories from current and former patients, which were described by delegates as “inspirational and very motivating.” The Trustees would like to express their thanks to all of the speakers.
The main group split off into five smaller discussion groups to allow people to discuss issues they were closer to. These included
The day concluded with a lively and inspiring talk by Giles Long MBE and a question and answer session.
The conference was the perfect opportunity for a number of cheques to be presented with funds raised by supporters at various events in recent weeks particularly The ‘Bake a Cake’ events which took place in Awareness Week. This year’s conference was supported by Mr Kipling who sponsored the event and kindly donated cakes as refreshments for the delegates.
The overall experience for many was described as excellent, calling it a positive and inspiring experience, informative and enjoyable, educational and inspirational. A patient said “I’ve learnt a lot and feel a positive outcome from it” while a parent said “it was good to catch up with people I’ve met before and also to meet others.” For more feedback information click here.
Overall the conference was a huge success, bringing realisation to many that they’re not alone. The contributions and suggestions made at the conference were gratefully received by the Trustees and will be considered for next year’s conference. Watch this space for further information on next year’s conference.
