•  Bláthnaid Foley Trust Ball – 22nd March 2008

The second annual Bláthnaid Foley Trust Ball was held in Sligo, Bláthnaid’s home town, on the North West coast of Ireland on the 22nd of March. Bláthnaid was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma at the end of April 2005 and lost her battle just 17 months later on the 16th of September 2006. It was an unfulfilled ambition of Bláthnaid’s to raise funds for research but unfortunately she was never well enough to do so. The Bláthnaid Foley Trust was formed to carry out her wishes and the first Ball was held on the 24th of March 2007 on the eve of her 14th birthday. This year’s event was every bit as successful as the first with the Bone Cancer Research Trust being represented by the night’s guest speaker, Dr Ian Lewis as well as Patrick Hardman and Patricia and Chris Smith. The night commenced with a drinks reception followed by a magnificent four course meal. After the meal Ian delivered a talk on the importance of research into this rare but devastating disease and congratulated the people of Sligo on their tremendous support that has helped the Bláthnaid Foley Trust raise in excess of €200,000 in the 18 months since its formation. Following the speeches a charity Auction was held and substantial funds were raised for this worthy cause. Once the night’s formalities were completed the crowd took to the dance floor and a great time was had by all.
